Spiritual altars are the spiritual centre for churches, mosques and are used in many other religious practices and locations.

But it doesn’t mean you have to be religious to use an altar as people in all different areas of spirituality use them.
Altars have been in people's homes for many millennia and are more common than you may think.

Spiritual altars are portals that are created by placing items in a specific location through intention, to open up a dynamic way of communicating with your support team of angels, spirit guides and your higher self.

This also includes any spirit that can help you with any challenges you’re struggling with right now.

And just like how you would go to a physical teacher or instructor to ask for help, approaching them with respect and sometimes even with gifts.

This is how you should approach spirit although the gifts you offer are not demanded by spirit guides...

But are used to send vibrations of gratitude to your guides which usually encourages them to help you more.

An altar also acts as a reminder to keep the spiritual portal connecting you to your guides open.

How to create a spiritual altar

To create an altar you don’t have to go out of your way, use anything fancy, or find some sacred space...

All you need to do is use items that uplift your heart and your spirit, that connect you with your divine nature.

Here you can use the following 5 steps to create your very own spiritual altar fast!

Step #1 Get clear on your intention for your altar

Altars can be created for very specific spirits to honour and show appreciation for them...

They can also be used for helping create a space to connect to your divine support team, which is why it’s important to get clear on your intention as to why you’re going to create an altar.

The power behind an altar isn’t the altar, the items, or location, but within the intention that the items and location represent and mean to you and the spirits.

Whatever you decide doesn’t have to be perfect and it isn’t set in stone, you can change your altars at any time just think about what you want guidance for and start from there.

What items should you put on your altar

Step #2 Get items that uplift your spirit

When you’re clear on your intention it makes it much easier to know what items you should use for your own personal altar.

This can be something as simple as pictures of people you love, or anything that has a spiritual significance to you.

This might be a cross or something such as a lucky bracelet that helps you feel protected when you wear it.

What you use and put on your altar can be large or small, expensive or cheap, bright or dark...

Pick items that by just being in their presence, causes your spirit to feel uplifted whilst opening your heart.

Here are some examples of items you can place on your altar:

  • Candles (make sure to practice fire safety and to never leave a lit candle unattended)
  • Incense
  • Crystals (certain crystals contain different energies that will be great for your personal intentions)
  • Chocolates
  • Sweets
  • Freshwater
  • Flowers
  • Tarot & oracle cards
  • Photos of loved ones
  • Spiritual figures for example a sculpture of the Buddha.
  • Or anything that your spirit guides request.

If you’re wondering what to do with food or water that you place on your altar, remove and throw them away without eating them yourself.

They were intended to be left as gifts for the spirits, not for your own consumption.

Setting up your spiritual altar

Step #3 Where to place your spiritual altar at home

When it comes to the location of your altar there are a few things you first want to consider:

Do you want a portable or a semi-permanent altar?

A portable altar is something that you can easily take with you anywhere you go or easily put away, if you only want to use it at specific times, which might be ideal if you don’t want visitors to see it.

A semi-permanent altar is an altar that is harder to put away and usually isn’t portable including items such as paintings and carpets.

There are also permanent altars that are more complex, can cost a lot more, and are difficult to remove, which I don’t recommend for beginners.

What location is convenient for you and will bring you the most joy?

When creating your altar you want it to be convenient, especially if you create a portable altar...

You want to feel uplifted and excited when you set your altar up...

This both uplifts your frequency and will encourage you to keep up the practice.

If you struggle to find space, you can use a small table/desk anywhere the is convenient for you...

Get clear on the items, the location, and whether you want a portable or semi-permanent altar before moving on to the next step.

Step #4 Setup your altar

This is the easiest step, simply take and place your items to the location you have chosen, you might place them on a fancy cloth, or it can be something as plain as a towel.

Arrange the items in a way that feels right for you and remember.....

You can add, remove or replace items whenever you feel like it, do what feels right to you.

Some of your guides may like certain items and ask for them to be added to your altar, as you begin to connect with them more frequently.

Step #5 How to Activate your altar (Optional)

This final step is optional but I still recommend it because it will strengthen your intention and connection to your altar.

You can do this in multiple ways such as through meditation, chants, and sending energies into the altar.

One way I find useful is spiritually uplifting and connecting my altar with my spirit guides.

You can do this yourself by saying the following at a time and in a location you won’t be disturbed say:

“I call upon my guardian angel, the ascended masters, and my highest divine guides to help me open a divine portal with the higher realms, to my higher self, and with any spirit guides that have my best interest in mind.”

Further connecting with your guides

Spiritual altars are a great, fun, and personalized way to help connect with your spirit guides.

They can also be used as a way of showing your appreciation for the assistance you’ve received from your guides.

Altars are also a great addition to use alongside other methods such as guided meditations for connecting with your divine assisting support team.

With Love
